The bond between a mother and child is one of the most profound and formative relationships in life. When a mother is unloving or emotionally unavailable, it can deeply affect how a child sees themselves, others, and the world around them. These effects don’t simply fade with time; they often follow us into adulthood, shaping our emotions, behaviours, and relationships.

This is not ‘mother blaming’.  Sometimes mothers are traumatised themselves, or their mothers were not the best, and therefore they. are not able to provide. safe, consistent mothering.  With the best will in the world, this is not OK.  We need to address the pain our mothers inflicted, even if they didn’t mean to.  We need to do this for ourselves and for our children.

As someone who has worked with many individuals healing from these experiences, and indeed experienced than myself, I want to gently explore this topic with you.  We can shed light on how these early dynamics can affect you today and how healing is both possible and deeply transformative.

How It Feels for a Child to Have an Unloving or Emotionally Unavailable Mother

When a child grows up with an emotionally unavailable or unloving mother, they often feel unseen, unheard, or unworthy. This may manifest as being dismissed or ignored when expressing emotions, leading to a belief that their feelings don’t matter. Children don’t have the emotional maturity to process. these experiences and. can unconsciously internalise the messages this treatment gives.  Children can adapt by trying to earn love by aiming for perfection or by becoming overly independent, taking on the role of caretaker (physically, emotionally or ‘imagined’)  for their parent. These survival mechanisms may help in childhood but can create struggles later in life.

How These Experiences Translate into Adulthood

In adulthood, these early experiences can show up in many ways. You might find yourself struggling with self-esteem, often feeling “not good enough” or unlovable (this may manifest unconsciously as multiple failed relationships or inability to form long-lasting bonds with others in the first place). You may have difficulty trusting others or experience intense fear of abandonment in relationships. Some people respond by becoming overly accommodating, putting others’ needs first, while others struggle to connect emotionally, feeling numb or disconnected. These patterns are not your fault; they are adaptations to unmet emotional needs in childhood.

Recognisable Symptoms and Patterns

Recognising the symptoms of these early wounds is the first step toward healing.

You might notice:

  • a persistent inner critic,
  • feelings of shame or guilt,
  • difficulty setting boundaries, or an
  • overwhelming fear of rejection.
  • or you might struggle with isolation

Some people experience:

  • anxiety,
  • depression, or aa
  • a lingering sense of emptiness that’s hard to explain.

These feelings are real, and they matter.

They are signs of a nervous system that has been on high alert for far too long, trying to protect you.  They can manifest for all sorts of reasons and may not indicate an unloving mother.  But they are indicative of something that is unprocessed from your past.

How Psychotherapy and Healing Help You

Healing from these experiences is not about blaming the past; it’s about nurturing yourself in the present and creating a future rooted in self-compassion. My work is centred on providing a safe, supportive space for this healing journey. I help you explore the unconscious beliefs, patterns and attachments formed in childhood. We bring these to light, enabling you to understand and reshape the way they influence your life today.  Then I can support you to process these feelings and help you to learn how to support your own feelings when they come along in the future.  it’s not about making memories go away, but about teaching you a compassionate way to manage them and process them for yourself.

Through counselling, we address your emotional and relational needs with sensitivity and care, tailoring the process to suit where you are right now. My intuitive approach provides a deeply personal way to reconnect with your inner voice and find clarity about the path ahead. For those who feel drawn to energy work, Reiki and spiritual healing can help release trauma held in the body, restoring balance and inner peace.

You are in control.  You get to choose the tools that help you.

What Healing Looks Like: The Outcomes

The outcomes of this work are profound. Many of my clients experience a sense of self-worth and begin to embrace themselves with kindness and acceptance. Relationships improve as they set healthy boundaries and learn to connect authentically. Emotional resilience develops, making it easier to navigate life’s challenges. Most importantly, clients often feel a renewed sense of wholeness, living more fully and authentically than ever before.

If any of this resonates with you, I want you to know that healing is possible. You don’t have to face this journey alone. I am here to support you with compassion and understanding.
