Experiencing trauma often leads us to disconnect from our bodies as a way to cope with emotional or physical pain. This disconnection can hinder our ability to heal and fully experience life. The Somatic Sensing Protocol is a gentle exercise designed to help you reconnect with your body, listen to its messages, and promote healing.

Steps to Practice Somatic Sensing

  1. Find Stillness and Tune In Begin by taking a few minutes to become still and quiet. Allow yourself to tune into your body and focus on your internal sensations.
  2. Locate the Pain Slowly and mindfully, locate areas of pain in your body. Take your time with this process, even if your instinct is to back away from the pain.
  3. Identify Pain Characteristics Focus on the first area of pain you wish to work with. In your mind’s eye, get a sense of the pain’s characteristics—its type (hot, cold, sharp, dull, rough, smooth) and severity (rate it on a scale of 1 to 10).
  4. Apply Healing Energy Imagine healing energy flowing through your hand. Feel the warmth or energy, and then lay your hand on the area of pain. If the pain is in an inaccessible spot, place your hand as close as possible and visualize the energy travelling to the correct area.
  5. Allow the Energy to Flow Keep your hand in place and allow the healing energy to flow into the pained area. Notice any changes as you stay with the sensation.
  6. Ask Reflective Questions While maintaining the energy flow, ask the following questions and write down the answers you receive:
    • What is it that you are trying to tell me?
    • What would your (area of body, e.g., knee) like to say to you?
    • What emotion is this part of your body feeling right now (e.g., sadness, anger)?
    • How can my consciousness support you better?
  7. Send Love to Your Body Channel love-infused touch into your body’s connective tissue, muscles, organs, and bones. Visualize nourishing your heart and all parts of your body wherever your hands are placed.
  8. Express Appreciation Tell your body how much you appreciate its hard work and resilience.
  9. Feel Strength and Connection Try to sense your body as a strong and integral part of yourself. Stay with this feeling for as long as needed.
  10. Repeat as Needed If you wish, move on to another area of pain and repeat the entire exercise.
  11. End with a Hug Concludes the exercise by giving yourself a hug. Wrap your arms around yourself, perhaps holding a cushion or cuddly toy, and send love, thanks, and compassion to yourself. Even if this feels silly, do it anyway!
  12. Practice Regularly Use this exercise every time you feel pain, and keep a record of your reflections to bring to your next session if we are working together.
