Because your healing deserves the right support

Choosing to begin counselling is a powerful and courageous step toward healing. It means you’re honouring something within you, a need to be heard, to understand yourself more deeply, to heal old wounds, or to navigate a difficult time with support.

But with so many therapists, styles, and approaches available, how can you be sure you’re choosing someone safe, ethical, and truly right for you?

While qualifications and professionalism are important, the human connection is at the heart of therapy. You deserve a therapist who not only knows what they’re doing but who makes you feel understood, respected, and emotionally safe.

Here are some essential questions to ask and qualities to look for, to help you feel confident and supported in your search:

  1. What Are Your Qualifications?

In the UK, a therapist should hold at least a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling, which includes supervised practice and in-depth theoretical training. Don’t hesitate to ask about a therapist’s training and experience; this is about your well-being.

A well-qualified therapist will understand trauma, mental health, and the depth of the human experience, and they’ll continue learning through ongoing professional development.

  1. Are You Registered with a Professional Body?

A trustworthy therapist will be a member of a professional body, which means they agree to follow ethical codes, attend supervision, and stay updated in their field.

Look for registration with:

  • BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy)
  • UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy)
  • NCS (National Counselling Society)
  • HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council – for some specific roles)
  • APA (Ayanay Psychological Accreditation)

These bodies help ensure you’re in safe hands.

  1. Do You Have a Supervisor and Insurance?

Every ethical therapist has regular clinical supervision, a space for reflection, growth, and accountability. They should also hold professional indemnity insurance to protect you both.

  1. How Do You Handle Confidentiality and Safeguarding?

Therapy should feel like a safe and private space. Ask:

  • Are there any times you would need to break confidentiality?
  • How do you handle safeguarding or risk?

A good therapist will explain this clearly and gently, so you always know where you stand.

  1. What Are Your Contact Boundaries?

Boundaries are vital in therapy, not to create distance, but to hold a safe, respectful space.

Ask:

  • How do you prefer to be contacted?
  • Are you available between sessions?
  • How quickly do you usually respond?

Clear boundaries help build trust and avoid confusion.

  1. What Is Your Payment Agreement?

Make sure you understand:

  • The cost per session
  • How long sessions last
  • How and when to pay
  • Policies on cancellations or missed sessions

It’s not just about money, it’s about clarity, mutual respect, and feeling valued.

  1. How Is My Data Handled and Stored?

In line with UK GDPR, therapists should be transparent about how they handle your information. You might ask:

  • Do you keep notes on our sessions?
  • Where are they stored, and for how long?
  • Are they anonymised?
  • Can I see my records if I want to?

Knowing your privacy is protected helps you relax into the process.

  1. Do You Offer a Written Agreement?

Most ethical therapists provide a written contract that includes everything you’ve discussed, fees, boundaries, confidentiality, and more. This isn’t about formality, it’s about clarity and mutual care.

Human Qualities to Look For

Beyond the formalities, the feel of the relationship matters just as much. Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel safe in their presence?
  • Do they listen without judgement?
  • Do I feel respected, seen, and understood?

A therapist doesn’t need to be perfect, but they do need to be real, attuned, grounded, and emotionally present. Trust your instincts. You’ll know when someone feels like the right fit.

You Deserve Safe, Ethical, and Compassionate Support

Therapy can be life-changing, but only when you feel safe enough to be vulnerable. The right therapist will welcome your questions, explain things clearly, and hold your story with care.

Taking time to choose the right person for you isn’t just practical, it’s a profound act of self-respect.

You are worthy of support that honours your whole being.
